Sensory Room

A Safe Space for Regulation, Relaxation & Growth

Welcome to the Sensory Room

The Sensory Room is a specially designed space created to support children with diverse sensory needs. Whether a child is seeking stimulation or needs help calming down, this room offers a variety of tools and equipment that engage the senses in a safe, controlled environment.
It is especially beneficial for children with Autism, Sensory processing disorder, ADHD, neurodevelopmental differences or any child who needs a calm, safe place to reset, providing opportunities for:

  • Anxiety & Emotional regulation
  • Sensory integration
  • Motor skill development
  • Self-expression and confidence building

Ball Pool – Great Sensory Activity

A ball pool offers a fun and safe environment where children can:

  •   Explore different sensations
  •   Practice body awareness
  •   Improve motor and social skills
  •   Feel calm and relaxed through deep pressure.

Benefits of a Ball Pool for Children with sensory needs

  • Tactile Stimulation
    •  Different textures, movement, and resistance of balls stimulate the sense of touch.
  • Proprioceptive Input (Body Awareness)
    •  Jumping, diving, or pushing against the balls provides deep pressure that can calm and organize the nervous system.
  • Gross Motor Skills Development
    •  Crawling, rolling, throwing, or reaching for objects in the pit strengthens muscles and coordination.
  • Social Interaction
    •  Group play in the pit promotes turn-taking, shared play, and communication.
  • Emotional Regulation
    •  The enclosed and cushioned environment can feel safe and soothing, helping reduce anxiety or sensory overload.

Sensory Tent in a Sensory Room – A Calming Space

Benefits & Guidelines:

  1. Reduces Sensory Overload
  • A sensory tent can be a calming place for kids with special needs, especially those with Autism.
  • It creates a safe, predictable environment where caregivers can control their surroundings based on their preferences.
  • This can really help with emotional regulation. Too much noise or light can be overwhelming for them.
  • The sensory tent reduces sensory overload by blocking bright lights and visual noise, creating a therapeutic environment.

  1. Enhances Focus and Concentration
  • A sensory tent is a great tool for anyone with ADHD, significantly enhancing focus and concentration.
  • The sensory tent comes with a blackout material that eliminates all visual noise and bright lights, creating a focused environment that minimizes external distractions.
  • This helps users to direct their attention solely to what’s in front of them, achieving heightened focus and concentration.
  • Something that is difficult to achieve in a room full of bright light, sounds, and visual distractions.
  • Also, engaging in sensory activities within the tent promotes self-regulation, helping manage impulsivity and hyperactivity.

  1. Aids in Sensory Integration
  • A sensory tent is a powerful tool in sensory integration, especially for people with sensory processing difficulties, including SPD.
  • It’s a special spot where they can be in control of their environment. You can control what you touch, see, hear, and even smell.
  • This helps their brain to make sense of all these sensations, a process called sensory integration.
  • The enclosed space and blackout material block all external stimuli, creating a focused space and helping to regulate sensory input more effectively.
  • Often, people use weighted blankets and toys within the tent to provide deep pressure input, contributing to proprioceptive input. Which in turn has a calming effect.

  1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety
  • Sensory tents are beneficial for anyone with anxiety disorders by creating a calming space.
  • The essential function of the tent is to block all external stimuli and foster a calming foundation.
  • The controlled environment, combined with soothing sensory activities, helps reduce anxiety and offer stress relief.
  • For example, deep pressure input with weighted blankets and relaxation techniques like meditation and breathing techniques contribute to a sense of security and emotional well-being.
  • You can also add soothing sounds and soft sensory lights to create a peaceful ambiance.

  1. Part of a Sensory Diet
  • A sensory tent is a common tool used in occupational and behavioral therapy during a sensory diet. It’s mainly used to manage the visual sense, especially in places that are too visually stimulating.
  • Think of classrooms with busy bulletin boards, brightly lit rooms, or walls with bright colors or busy patterns.
  • Such environments can be overwhelming, but a sensory tent can help. It blocks out all visual distractions, letting you organize your surroundings and focus on specific activities.
  • Inside the tent, you could use a flashlight to look at books or play with sensory toys to narrow your visual attention.
  • Other fun activities that provide controlled visual stimulation include playing with sensory toys that light up.
  • The sensory tent is all about giving you control over your visual environment.

  1. Great for Sensory Lights Play
  • Sensory tents excel in sensory light play because of their blackout effect.
  • When all visual stimuli are blocked, you create a controlled dark environment where all the sensory light toys pop, offering a very intense and focused light experience.
  • This is super fun and engaging for everyone, even adults love it.
  • When coupled with weighted blankets and additional sensory toys, the experience transforms into a highly calming environment.
  • It’s like a multi-sensory play therapy (visual, tactile, proprioceptive) that promotes relaxation and enhances emotional well-being.

LED Bubble Tube in Sensory Rooms – A Visual Delight for Calming and Focus

What is an LED Bubble Tube? An LED bubble tube is a tall, transparent tube filled with water and lit by color-changing LED lights. Air bubbles constantly rise through the water, creating a soothing visual and auditory effect. It's commonly used in sensory rooms to help calm, engage, and regulate.

Benefits of a Bubble Tube:

  1. Visual Stimulation
    • Gentle light transitions and moving bubbles can calm the brain and reduce anxiety.
  2. Auditory Feedback
    • The soft bubbling sound provides consistent, calming background noise.
  3. Promotes Focus and Attention
    • Children may sit and watch the tube, improving their ability to stay still and focused.
  4. Encourages Cause and Effect Learning
    • Some tubes are interactive—children can change colors or bubble speed with a remote or buttons.
  5. Tactile Engagement
    • If reachable, kids enjoy touching the tube's surface to feel the vibration or coolness.
  6. Safe, Soothing Light Source
    • A great alternative to harsh overhead lights, especially for light-sensitive children.

Spinning Chair in Sensory Rooms – Movement for Focus and Regulation

What is a Spinning Chair? A spinning chair is a special seat that allows a child to spin or rotate safely. It provides vestibular input—which means it helps stimulate the balance and movement system in the brain. This input is crucial for kids who need help with body awareness, focus, or emotional regulation.

Benefits of a Spinning Chair

  1. Vestibular Stimulation
    • Helps children understand their body in space, improving balance and coordination.
  1. Calming or Alerting Effect
    • Some kids feel calmer after spinning gently; others become more alert and focused.
  2. Improves Attention and Learning Readiness
    • Movement before seated work can increase concentration and engagement.
  3. Encourages Body Control
    • Teaches kids to monitor and control their own movement.
  4. Fun and Motivating
    • Spinning can be very enjoyable, and can be used as a reward or break.

Timocco in a Sensory Room – Movement-Based Virtual Play with Purpose

What is Timocco? Timocco is a computer-based or tablet-based program that uses a camera or motion sensors to track hand movements. Kids play fun, interactive games while working on therapy goals like:
• Motor coordination • Visual attention • Body awareness • Executive functioning • Sensory integration It feels like a game—but it’s rooted in occupational and physical therapy strategies.

Benefits of Timocco

  1. Improves Motor Skills

    • Therapists can choose specific games tailored to a child's individual needs and IEP goals.

Plasma Lamp in a Sensory Room – Visual Wonder & Gentle Engagement

What is a Plasma Lamp? A plasma lamp is a clear glass sphere filled with gases and powered by electricity to create colorful light streams that react to touch and movement. When a child touches the globe, the “lightning” inside follows their fingers, creating a captivating visual and tactile experience.

Benefits of Using a Plasma Lamp

  1. Visual Stimulation
    • The flowing lights and shifting colors engage children who are visually oriented.
  2. Encourages Cause and Effect
    • Kids see instant visual responses to their touch, reinforcing cognitive concepts.
  1. Tactile Engagement
    • While the outer globe is smooth, the child experiences sensory input through light and interaction without actual heat.
  2. Supports Focus and Calm
    • The rhythmic, flowing light patterns can have a calming effect, especially in a quiet environment.
  3. Inspires Curiosity and Exploration
    • Promotes curiosity, fine motor exploration, and interest in science-based objects.

Sensory Cushion in a Sensory Room – Support for Focus, Posture & Regulation

What is a Sensory Cushion? A sensory cushion is a round, air-filled cushion that can be placed on a chair or floor. It creates a slightly unstable surface that encourages micro-movements, promoting core strength and sensory input through balance and motion.
It’s a powerful tool for children who:
• Need movement to stay focused • Struggle with posture • Seek sensory input through their core

Benefits of a Sensory Cushion for Kids

  1. Improves Focus and Attention
